Nothing says comfort food quite like “Nana’s Sweet Potato Pie a Southern Treat”. This easy-to-follow recipe will deliver a mouthwatering Southern treat no one can deny!

Treat your family to a classic Southern favorite with Nana’s sweet potato pie. Made with just the right mix of spices and sugar, this sweet recipe is sure to be a hit with anyone lucky enough to take a bite!

1. But First, Make Your Pie Crust

Pie Crust for Nana's Sweet Potato Pie a Southern Treat

Don’t let this freak you out! It really is easier than you think, but of course with anything you do, practice makes perfect. FYI: Do not bake pie this pie shell! It will bake with your Sweet Potato Pie filling.

For Nana’s Never Fell Pie Crust, you will need:

Directions:

  1. STIR flour and salt in large bowl until blended. Cut shortening into flour mixture using pastry blender or fork until shortening pieces are the size of peas. Gradually add just enough water, 1 Tbsp. at a time, stirring with fork just until dough holds together and forms a smooth ball.
  2. SHAPE dough into a ball for single pie crust. Divide dough in half and shape it into two balls for double crust pie. Flatten into one-half inch disk(s). Wrap disk(s) in plastic wrap or parchment paper. Chill 30 minutes or up to 2 days.
  3. ROLL dough on lightly floured surface, rolling from center outward. For a 9-inch pie plate, roll into an 11-inch circle. For a 9 1/2-inch deep-dish pie plate, roll into a 12-inch circle. Transfer dough to pie plate.
  4. Trim edges of dough flute edges as desired. Cut several 1/2-inch slits in top crust to vent steam. Bake pie according to specific recipe directions.

2. Gather & Measure Ingredients

Gather the Ingredients for Nana's Sweet Potato Pie a Southern Treat

FYI: I wrap my potatoes in aluminum foil and boil them on top of my stove for about 30-40 minutes until or until tender. To me this is quicker than baking them in the oven, plus they are a lot juicier.

For Nana’s sweet potato pie, you will need to measure out the following ingredients:

  • 4 large, sweet potatoes, or 2 cups
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup of melted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1-9-inch-deep dish pie shell, unbaked.

3. Mix Your Ingredients

Peel and mash up your cooked sweet potatoes using the whisk from your mixer. Next, add all your ingredients that you have measured out to your sweet potatoes in the mixing bowl of your stand mixer.   Mix all the ingredients at once until well incorporated with the wire whisk.

4. Preheat the Oven

Preheated Oven to Cook Nana's Sweet Potato Pie a Southern Treat

Begin by preheating the oven to 350°F. Once the oven is heated, you can pour your sweet potato mixture into your prepared pie shell. Place pie plate on pizza stone (if you have one) and bake in 350-degree oven for 60 minutes or until the toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Note: If you have a pizza stone, I highly recommend using one to bake your pies. It cooks the pies evenly and eliminates the soggy bottom crust. Makes your pies even more delicious.

5. Cool & Store

Cooling Racks to Cool Nana's Sweet Potato Pie a Southern Treat

When you take your pie out, place it on a cake cooling rack before serving. This will give the pie time to “rest” and it will be much easier to cut.

Now that you have cut your pie and enjoyed it, it’s time to store it in an airtight container and place it in the fridge.

6. Now, Enjoy the Fruits of Your Labor!

Sweet Potato Pie and Coffee

Now that you have created this delicious southern treat, you need to grab some coffee for you and your guests and indulge in the sweetness of this awesome pie.

The powerful motor of the mixer combined with the precision of the attachment allows for effortless blending. This kneading of the dough, results in a perfectly flaky crust every time.

Another advantage of using a KitchenAid attachment is the time and effort it saves. Mixing and kneading dough by hand can be a laborious task, often leading to inconsistent results.

Kitchen Aid with Dough Hook is part of The Ultimate Guide: Choosing the Perfect KitchenAid Attachment for Flawless Pie Crusts

KitchenAid offers a variety of attachments specifically designed for making pie crusts. Each attachment has its own unique features and advantages. This allows you to choose the one that best suits your needs and preferences. Let’s explore some of the most popular options:

1. **Dough hook: ** The classic dough hook is a staple attachment for any KitchenAid mixer. It is perfect for making pie crusts. It effortlessly kneads and blends the ingredients, resulting in a tender and flaky crust. The dough hook is especially useful when working with tougher doughs, such as those used for savory pies or tarts.

2. **Pastry cutter: ** The pastry cutter attachment is a versatile tool. It can be used for a variety of baking tasks. This includes making pie crusts. It works by cutting the fat into the flour, creating a crumbly texture. Making it ideal for achieving a flaky crust. The pastry cutter attachment is particularly well-suited for delicate doughs, such as those used for fruit pies or quiches.

3. **Flex edge beater: ** The flex edge beater attachment is designed with a flexible edge. This allows the flex edge to scrape the sides of the bowl as it mixes. This ensures all the ingredients are thoroughly incorporated. While not specifically designed for pie crusts, the flex edge beater can be a useful option. For those of you who prefer a less flaky crust and a more uniform texture.

3. Understanding the key features of each attachment

Understanding the Key Features of Each Attachment is part of The Ultimate Guide: Choosing the Perfect KitchenAid Attachment for Flawless Pie Crusts

To choose the perfect KitchenAid attachment for flawless pie crusts, it’s important to understand the key features of each option. This will help you determine which attachment best suits your baking style and desired crust texture. Let’s take a closer look at the key features of the dough hook, pastry cutter, and flex edge beater attachments:

1. **Dough hook: ** The dough hook is characterized by its unique spiral design. This allows it to efficiently knead and mix dough. It is made of durable stainless steel and is dishwasher safe, making it easy to clean. The dough hook attachment is available in varied sizes. This accommodates various mixer models that can handle large batches of dough.

2. **Pastry cutter: ** The pastry cutter attachment consists of multiple stainless-steel blades. These blades cut through the fat and blend it into the flour. It is built to last and can withstand heavy use. The pastry cutter attachment is also dishwasher safe, ensuring easy cleanup. It is compatible with most KitchenAid mixers and comes with a convenient storage case.

4. Factors to consider when choosing a KitchenAid attachment for pie crusts

Factors to Consider when Choosing a KitchenAid Attachment for Pie Crust is part of The Ultimate Guide: Choosing the Perfect KitchenAid Attachment for Flawless Pie Crusts

When buying a KitchenAid attachment for pie crusts, there are several factors to consider for the best results. Here are some key things to keep in mind:

1. **Texture preference: ** Think about the type of pie crust you prefer. If you prefer a flaky crust, the pastry cutter or dough hook addition would be the best choice. However, if you prefer a more uniform and less flaky texture, the flex edge beater addition might be more practical.

2. **Baking frequency: ** Consider how often you plan to make pie crusts. If you’re an avid baker who frequently makes pies, investing in a high-quality attachment, such as the pastry cutter or dough hook, would be a wise choice. If you only make pies occasionally, a more budget-friendly option, such as the flex edge beater, may suffice.

3. **Compatibility: ** Ensure that the addition you choose is compatible with your specific KitchenAid mixer model. Most additions are designed to fit a wide range of mixers, but it’s always best to double-check before making a purchase.

4. **Ease of use and cleaning: ** Consider how easy the addition is to use and clean. Look for attachments that are dishwasher safe and have user-friendly designs. This will save you time and effort overall.

By carefully considering these factors, you can choose the perfect KitchenAid attachment that will ensure flawless pie crusts every time.

5. Step-by-step guide to using a KitchenAid attachment for pie crusts (1-5)

Step by Step Guide to Using a KItchenAid Attachment for Pie Crusts

Now that you’ve chosen the ideal KitchenAid attachment for your pie crusts, it’s time to put it to use. Follow this step-by-step guide for the best results:

1. **Gather your ingredients: ** Measure out the flour, fat (such as butter or shortening), salt, and any other ingredients specified in your pie crust recipe.

2. **Attach the chosen KitchenAid attachment: ** Securely attach the dough hook, pastry cutter, or flex edge beater to your KitchenAid mixer.

3. **Mix the dry ingredients: ** In the mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Use the lowest speed setting to mix the dry ingredients until well combined.

4. **Add the fat: ** Cut the cold fat into small cubes and add it to the mixing bowl. Start the mixer on low speed and gradually increase too medium. Mix until the fat is evenly distributed, and the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

5. **Add the liquid: ** Slowly pour in the liquid (milk) while the mixer is running. Continue mixing until the dough starts to come together and pull away from the sides of the bowl.

Continue Step-by-step guide to using a KitchenAid attachment for pie crusts (6-9)

6. **Knead the dough: ** If using the dough hook attachment, switch to a medium-low speed and let the attachment knead the dough for a few minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If using the pastry cutter or flex edge beater attachment, remove the dough from the mixing bowl and gently knead it by hand on a lightly floured surface.

7. **Chill the dough: ** Wrap the dough in parchment paper and refrigerate for the specified time in your recipe. Chilling the dough allows the fat to solidify, resulting in a flakier crust.

8. **Roll out and shape the crust: ** Once the dough has chilled, remove it from the refrigerator and roll it out on a lightly floured surface (or just use the parchment paper you wrapped it in) according to your recipe’s instructions. Shape the crust as desired in pie plate.

9. **Bake your pie: ** Follow your pie recipe for baking instructions and enjoy your perfectly flaky pie crust!

By following these steps, the Ultimate Guide: Choosing the Perfect KitchenAid Attachment for Flawless Pie Crusts, you’ll be able to achieve consistently excellent pie crusts with your chosen KitchenAid attachment.

6. Troubleshooting common issues with KitchenAid attachments for pie crusts

Troubleshooting common issues with KitchenAid attachments for pie crusts

Even with the right attachment and careful preparation, issues can still arise when making pie crusts. Here are some common problems and their solutions:

1. **Dry or crumbly dough: ** If your dough is too dry or crumbly, try adding a small amount of liquid, such as water or milk, while the mixer is running. Add gradually until the desired consistency is achieved.

2. **Sticky or wet dough: ** If your dough is too sticky or wet, add a sprinkle of flour while the mixer is running. Add gradually until the dough comes together without sticking to your hands or the bowl.

3. **Uneven mixing: ** If you notice that the ingredients are not mixing evenly, stop the mixer and scrape down the sides of the bowl using a spatula. Resume mixing until the desired consistency is reached.

4. **Overmixing: ** Be careful not to overmix the dough, as this can result in a tough crust. Mix just until the ingredients are combined, and the dough starts to come together.

5. **Attachment not fitting properly: ** If you’re having trouble attaching the chosen KitchenAid attachment, make sure it is compatible with your mixer model. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions or consult customer support for assistance.

By troubleshooting these common issues, you’ll be able to overcome any challenges that may arise during the pie crust-making process.

4. **Dry thoroughly: ** After cleaning, ensure that the attachment is completely dry before storing it. Any moisture left on the attachment can lead to rust or deterioration.

5. **Store properly: ** Store the attachment in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. If the attachment came with a storage case or bag, use it to protect it from dust and other contaminants.
